It was Mark's first time on the stretch and with the river very low and clear we decided to go all out on a floatfishing attack. We set up two float rods, one with 3lb Maxima direct to a size 16 hook and the other with 5lb Maxima direct to a size 14. Feeding with casters, hemp and white maggots we were soon into chub between six ounces and a pound and a half and as the night progressed the barbel moved into our swim and Mark landed fish up to the five pound mark in a catch totalling around thirty five pounds.

Considering he was trying this type of fishing for the first time he did well and we've already got the next session lined up next week! The river is really fishing well in parts right now and the rainfall in Wales earlier in the week has put a little colour back in which should see it fish well again this week.

On Tuesday I visited Lemington Lakes, Moreton-in-Marsh for a feature with Match Angling Plus magazine and what a great place it turned out to be. You can read all about the place in the next issue which is out on August 1st but in the meantime if you get the chance to fish there I would recommend it. We had some excellent sport with carp on meat and corn fishing the pole at thirteen metres and the only pity was we had to finish for catch pics just when the fish were really starting to feed well.

Disappointing midweek match for me on the river. On a hot muggy night when only 36lbs was needed to win I struggled for a couple of pounds at peg 105 on Winterdyne. I'm hoping to make up for it though this weekend with another match on the same stretch and with the extra colour in I predict there will be some good weights. I'll let you know how it went next week.
