A couple of days ago I had a long conversation with Dick Derrington on the telephone about the August Bank Holiday angling festival at Evesham. For many years John Smiths Brewery has sponsored the event. Last year saw the last 'John Smiths' as the company decided to withdraw it's sponsorship and many anglers wondered whether it would go ahead again if no major sponsor came forward. The good news is that it is on again and anglers are being offered even more chances than usual to qualify for the final.

I am really pleased about this as it's an event that is important to a lot of people and one that always attracts big crowds to the Evesham match venue. I was lucky enough to win the event in 1988 and have come close on several other occasions with seconds and thirds. It's an event I would dearly love to win again and I'll be trying hard this time round.

Dick told me that he has received massive support from the angling trade to enable this years event to go ahead and there are sixteen qualifying rounds leading up to the big final on a variety of venues.
The individual final on 25th August will see the winner walk away with a cool £2,000 top prize and on the Sunday the venue will play host to the Wychavon team champs, always a keenly contested competition. On the Monday there is the individual Wychavon Championships, which, like the Saturday event sees qualifiers and invited anglers doing battle.

This year, I am pleased to report, the controlling club Evesham A.A. is allowing the use of bloodworm in the matches and I feel sure this will benefit the catches. It's going to be an interesting weekend with some anglers going all out for big fish and others going for a weight of small fish.

In addition to the angling competitions there is the usual tented village offering loads of tackle bargains so it's definitely one not to miss.

Tickets are now available for all qualifying rounds from Dick and Carol Derrington on 01527 871291.

Hopefully I'll see you there!
