Last Saturday I fished the match at Bewdley and when I drew peg 115, the pipe swim, I really fancied my chances of a big weight. I won off this peg on the first midweek match of the season with sixty-one pounds of barbel; I've had a successful magazine feature off it and done some filming for Sky TV on the same swim. You could say then that I've got to know the swim quite well this season! Unfortunately things didn't go exactly to plan and I could only manage 11.5.0 from it this time but that was good enough for a pick up in fifth position. Once again the match fished hard. Thirty pounds took top spot but only thirteen pounds was needed for third. I had three barbel and two chub together with the regulation "Severn eel" but bites were at a premium all day.

On Sunday I had a day off from fishing to go to West Brom v Birmingham City. It finished 1-1 and the performance was considerably better than last season when Blues stuffed us three nil (and it could have been more). On Tuesday things got even better on the football front with the Baggies winning 2-1 at Derby in the Worthington Cup. Another victory followed at Portsmouth at the weekend…heady days if you're an Albion fan!

On Sunday I competed in the Bridgnorth open on the Severn and was amazed to win with just 21.4.0. This comprised of six barbel all on the feeder with two white maggots on the hook. I drew one swim above the famous John Brights ford, it rained all day and to be honest, with the river around two feet up it was a pretty boring match. Once I'd weighed I thought, at best, I might win the section. As the weights came in it looked like I might frame. Once they were all in it soon became apparent I'd won. I couldn't believe it but the venue did owe me something I guess. Five cashless visits so far this season have now been turned around and now I'm in profit on the series!
